Question by Councillor Seal Chong Wah, to the Lord Mayor as part of Brisbane City Council Council Meeting, Tues 20th May 2025
My Question is to the Lord Mayor.
An application was made to extend the state government Heritage Status of Victoria Park/Barrambin over most of the park.
The State Government Department of Environment, Tourism, Science & Innovation supports this application and has now made a recommendation to the independent Queensland Heritage Council to consider this application.
The heritage council has until 15th July 2025 to reach a decision.
I note the Brisbane City Council made a submission to the Department of Environment opposing this application.
The Lord Mayor will know that the Olympic Host Contract for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, between the IOC, Brisbane City Council and Qld State government, clearly stipulates that no Olympic venues can be constructed in culturally protected areas or their adjacent sites.
Lord Mayor, as the Chief Executive of the State Government Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation has now supported this application to extend state heritage status across Barrambin, does the Lord Mayor accept that building an Olympic stadium in Victoria Park/Barrambin will violate the terms of the Olympic Host Contract 2032?
