David Crisafulli’s LNP State Government and Adrian Schrinner's LNP Brisbane City Council are determined to destroy Victoria Park / Barrambin to make way for a new Olympics stadium, backflipping on their election promise.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has the power - and the grounds - to oppose a stadium at Victoria Park / Barrambin. But we need your help to encourage them.
In order to hold the 2032 Olympic Games, the Brisbane City Council and State Government have a Host City Contract with the IOC. This contract clearly states requirements that new Olympic venues are not in or next to natural and cultural protected areas; and implement due diligence processes in line with the United Nation’s protection frameworks for indigenous people’s rights.
The LNP knows their plans for Victoria Park / Barrambin conflict with many environmental, cultural, and heritage protection laws. That’s why they are letting Olympics developments override 15 laws, removing any grounds for accountability or legal challenge if an Olympic development breaks the law!
But the LNP can’t override the Host City Contract with the IOC, or their contractual obligations for climate action, environmental, cultural, or heritage protections. And no action from any government can remove the cultural heritage of the site, as there is an immense body of evidence by expert historians proving its significant cultural value.
The Australian federal government are also now actively supporting the destruction of Barrambin with their announcement to include the proposed Victoria Park stadium within their $3.4bn in funding for Games infrastructure, despite the stadium not complying with the IOC agreement.
Can you email the IOC today, urging them to oppose a stadium at Victoria Park / Barrambin on the grounds that it would be in breach of their Host City Contract? Use our email tool to contact the IOC directly. Your email will also be sent to relevant representatives in the Australian Federal Government, Qld State Government and Brisbane City Council.
