Why does the LNP continue promote development on flood plains?

Question by Councillor Seal Chong Wah, to the Lord Mayor as part of Brisbane City Council Council Meeting, Tues 12th August 2025

Lord Mayor, through the Chair, 10,000 properties are being added to the Flood Overlay Maps along Ithaca Creek, Enoggerra Creek and Breakfast Creek and another 2,746 properties are having their flood risk classification increased. 

 

This unprecedented number of properties being added to flood risk maps, from one study, has been hidden from the public, and myself as a councillor since October last year. The month of the Queensland State Elections.

 

This administration’s ongoing development strategy of promoting building in high risk flood zones, is resulting in insurance premiums skyrocketing for people in flood risk areas. Premiums that many will not be able to afford. 

 

To be clear, there is no question that we support housing development across the city, just not in high risk flood zones. 

 

Lord Mayor, why has this LNP administration continued to promote high density development in these high flood risk areas, knowing full well that tens of thousands of people will see massive insurance premiums, with many unable to afford them and others uninsurable at all?
